This August, one hundred and six men and women began a year of service with Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC), an independent, non-profit domestic volunteer program that serves Milwaukee, Chicago and eight other urban areas. Thirteen of those volunteers have moved into three Chicago houses: Casa Oscar Romero-in Uptown, Carter Heyward House-in Albany Park, and Sojourner Truth House-in Humboldt Park. The seven Milwaukee volunteers live in the Dorothy Day House next door to Divine Word Lutheran Church.
Lutheran Volunteer Corps offers people a challenging year of exploring their spirituality while working for social justice, living in intentional community and simplifying their lifestyles. The volunteers in the Greater Milwaukee and Metropolitan Chicago Synods serve full time in both direct service and behind-the-scenes work. They join more than 1,500 volunteers who have served with Lutheran Volunteer Corps nationally over the last 29 years.
After their year of service, many volunteers go to seminary, law school, social work school, or continue their work in the non-profit sector. They find creative ways to make their year of service into a lifetime of commitment. LVC is grateful for the prayers, time, and financial gifts it receives from individuals and congregations to support these and recruit future volunteers.
LVC volunteers, alumni, and staff are excited to come to your church and share their experience and the work of the program. If you would like to schedule a visit, contact Lauren Sanders, City Coordinator at LSanders@LutheranVolunteerCorps.org, or call her at 773-832-9426.
