Sermon for January 25th, 2009 – I Will Make You Become Fishers of Men

fishers

This sermon is from the 10:30 AM service. I made major changes to the sermon between services so I encourage those who attended the 8 AM service to listen to this one. Given that I made changes and didn’t have much time to practice the sermon you will notice that it is a little rough around the edges..Mea culpa.

Lectionary Texts

Psalm 62 [show]Psalm 62 [62:1]For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. [2]He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. [3]How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? [4]They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah [5]For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. [6]He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. [7]On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. [8]Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah [9]Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. [10]Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them. [11]Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, [12]and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31 [show]1 Corinthians 7:29-31 [29]This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, [30]and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, [31]and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. (ESV)

Mark 1:14-20 [show]Mark 1:14-20 [14]Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, [15]and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." [16]Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. [17]And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." [18]And immediately they left their nets and followed him. [19]And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. [20]And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. (ESV)

Additional texts and references used in sermon
Psalm 146 [show]Psalm 146 [146:1]Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! [2]I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. [3]Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. [4]When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. [5]Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, [6]who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; [7]who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; [8]the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. [9]The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. [10]The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD!

Mark 10:28-31 [show]Mark 10:28-31 [28]Peter began to say to him, "See, we have left everything and followed you." [29]Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, [30]who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. [31]But many who are first will be last, and the last first." (ESV)

1 Corinthians 1:11-13 [show]1 Corinthians 1:11-13 [11]For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. [12]What I mean is that each one of you says, "I follow Paul," or "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Cephas," or "I follow Christ." [13]Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? (ESV)
