Eight Christians killed by Muslims in Nigeria

Muslims recently attacked Christian villages and killed at least eight Christians in Kaduna and Plateau states of northern Nigeria. On July 3, five believers, including a primary school teacher and mother of six children, were killed by Muslims in Kizachi village in Kaduna State. The Muslims also burned down five homes belonging to Christians. Local sources reported that the police had stopped protecting the village on July 2 after the government failed to pay their salaries.

The next evening, Muslims armed with guns and machetes invaded Ganawuri community, near Jos. Three Christians are presumed to be dead. A spokesperson of the Nigerian military’s Special Task Force (STF) said the attackers were suspected herdsmen from neighbouring communities of Kaduna State. STF received an emergency call and, upon response, a fire fight ensued with the attackers. One of the attackers was shot and six were arrested. Those arrested have since been handed over to the state police for further investigations.

This latest violence came on the heels of a March 7 attack against Christians in Jos in which approximately 500 people, mainly women and children, were murdered (click here for more information). It is estimated that many more thousands of Christians have been killed in northern Nigeria since the introduction of Shariah law in 2001. (Source: International Christian Concern)

Please pray against further violence and unrest in Nigeria. Ask the Lord to give strength and wisdom to those in authority to help them deal with this situation. Pray that He will comfort those who are suffering. Pray that the Lord will use the testimony of believers in Nigeria to strengthen His church and greatly add to its number.

Muslims kill Christian woman and children in Pakistan

A Christian woman and her four children were murdered by a Muslim mob in Jhelum, Pakistan after her 11-year-old son was accused of committing blasphemy. On June 21, the Christian boy went to the local store to buy laundry detergent. The shopkeeper, upon learning the boy was a Christian, refused to sell any products to him. When the boy returned home and informed his mother of the incident, she phoned her husband — Jamshed Masih — and asked him to rush home from work. Before he was able to return, Muslim residents arrived at the family’s home and accused the boy of committing blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad. When Jamshed’s wife argued against the accusation, they killed her and the children — two boys and two girls. Authorities are reportedly too fearful of the local Muslim leader to file charges. The family had earlier been warned by the Muslim leader to leave the predominately Muslim area. (Source: Compass Direct)

Please pray the Lord will comfort Jamshed. Pray that he will not despair but be strengthened by God’s Word. Pray the Lord will bring His peace amid this terrible injustice. Pray the Lord will give wisdom to those in authority to know how to deal with the violence and injustice being perpetrated against the Christian population. You can post a prayer for Jamshed on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall.

Christian woman brutally attacked in India

A Christian woman, Amodini, was brutally attacked on July 6 for sharing her faith in Karnataka, India. Amodini (40) is a member of a church where a Gospel for Asia-supported missionary serves as pastor. She was at her home when a group of 15 men arrived and began accusing her of forcing people to convert to Christianity. They then grabbed and began to beat her. Witnesses of the horrific scene said, "Amodini’s clothes were removed in public and she was attacked with knives." At last report, she was hospitalized and in critical condition. Police have arrested 14 of the accused attackers. (Source: Assist News Service)

The believers in the area ask for prayers for Amodini, that the Lord would heal her wounds. They also ask that the peace of God will keep her firm in her faith. Pray also for the men who so cruelly attacked her. Pray that they will repent and turn to Christ. Pray that believers in India will continue to be bold in sharing the Gospel amid violent opposition.

Ryan was homeschooled his whole life in a small town in Pennsylvania. He has gone to church his whole life where he grew passionate for music and at the age of seven found Christ in a small room in his church. Through many hills and turns he tries to follow the path best he can, and he fails over and over, but knows he’s not perfect in any way, just forgiven. Ryan is excited for what God is going to do through and around him this year and the rest of his life.

Jessica Steffen
Warren, Michigan

Jessica has a strong passion for the Lord. As of September 2008, she has completely given herself to God. He has done nothing but continually bless her through His Grace and Love. She has a very positive outlook on life and is amazed by God’s ways of working in it. She loves spending time with her family, meeting new people, sports and reading. She is excited to serve the Lord through Captive Free and cannot wait to see what He has in store for her.
“Many wise things have been said about love. But to really understand love in its purest form, we must go to the Author of Love. God is Love. And He decided to display this love through the most dramatic act in human history, the ultimate demonstration of love, Christ’s death on the cross. There is no greater example of love then this. It would take the coldest hearts to be unmoved by this dramatic demonstration.”

Well….I’m back from my trip to LA. It was an extremely busy and productive trip. I was able to attend the memorial service for my Uncle Bob, spend a couple of days with my cousin Steve who is in the nursing home and help him pay bills etc, and I was able to reconnect with relatives of both sides of my family. I am exhausted..and grateful. I’m exhausted because in addition to the hard work that goes into connecting with loved ones around issues of serious illness and death, I had the opportunity to spend hours and hours every day crisscrossing southern California on congested freeways. At one point I had my credit card suspended because purchases were being made in so many different places that Mastercard thought my card had been stolen. But most of all I am grateful….. grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with so many amazing people, grateful for the chance to do what little I could to bring some comfort to the grieving, and grateful to be reminded that having people who love you is a precious gift that must be honored and nurtured. Most of all I am grateful that so many of my relatives, especially my Uncle Bob, know and love Jesus.

Please pray for my Aunt Kathy as she grieves the death of her husband …. and for my cousin Steve whose leg will be amputated if they can’t get the infections/MRSA under control.

Laura Bachman sent this note to me and I want to pass it on to the people of Peace….

Dear Friends and Members of Burlington Area Churches,

Thank you for agreeing to join with fellow Christians in Worshiping Jesus Together, a unified witness to the community through praising God together in the Veteran’s Parade (part of Chocolate Fest weekend). We will walk and worship to praise music. The King’s Closet will supply some flags, streamers, billows and garments of praise. People may also bring tambourines, streamers, or flags of their own or from their church.

A banner will say that the group is “sponsored by” The King’s Closet, a small family Burlington-based business/ministry that makes garments of praise and presents worship workshops and programs. We seek to engage people in a childlike spirit of worship, pleasing to the Lord and demonstrating our joy and trust in our salvation.

Congregations may send one or two individuals, whole families, or groups of any size. Please notify me if people will represent your congregation as a banner will list participating churches. The more churches we have, the stronger our statement of solidarity in Worshiping Jesus Together—our theme.
