Hospice Volunteers Needed

Hospice Alliance volunteers are a vital part of the hospice team. While enhancing the lives of patients and their families, volunteers gain satisfaction and enrichment in their own lives. There are many ways to help, including:

Companionship
Respite care
Running errands
Nursing home visits
Mailings
Office help
Computer work
Expos and health fair
Fundraising
Gardening
Preparing meals / baking

We have a new 8 session training class beginning February 21 through March 15, 2012. Sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Hospice Alliance office. The training covers an introduction to hospice services, communication, disease process, and the role of Hospice Alliance team members.

First Sunday-Food Sunday

The Love, Inc. food pantry needs:

Canned soup with beef or chicken,

hearty soups,

heart healthy or low sodium soups

Canned meat products: beef stew, chicken & dumplings, beef, chicken, hash, ham, chili, Spam or other lunceon meat, tuna, salmon, sardines, etc.

Canned pasta items that contain meat.

Sugar is also needed.

Now that the holiday season has ended there are usually less items donated. Food pantries typically receive fewer items in January/February/March. Let’s try and make our congregation donations an exception.

As always meat products, fruit and fruit juice, peanut butter, cereal, oatmeal or other hot cereals, pasta dishes with meat, soups with chicken or beef, and pancake mix & pancake syrup are needed. Any item you would like to donate is very much appreciated. Thanks!!

Burlington Community Blood Drive

The next blood drives are Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Tuesday, February 21, 2 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Veterans Terrace. Please see poster in narthex for further information. January is National Blood Donor Month. Remember, you’re never too old to donate some blood to help save lives in our community. The Blood Center services over 50 hospitals including all Aurora hospitals (Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington and Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in our immediate area), ProHealth Care hospitals in Waukesha County, Children’s Hospital, and Froedtert Hospital.

Love, Inc. “Friday Night Lights” Annual Fundraiser

This annual fundraiser will be held Friday, March 2, 2012. The event includes a fish fry, live auction, and silent auction. Preview items and cash bar 5-6:30 p.m. Fish fry dinner 6:30-7:30 p.m. Live auction at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.00 per person. Tickets are available at Love, Inc. 480 S. Pine St., Burlington. We will be collecting items to make baskets to donate to the silent auction. Please see Jeanne Rateike for details or if you have an idea for a theme basket. Deadline to donate is February 19.

A Letter concerning Sanctity of Human Life Sunday from Charles Krause

Dear Pastor,

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, January 22, 2012,happens to fall on the actual anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. 39 years ago only two justices spoke up for the rights of preborn children when the majority voted to strip away their legal protections. One was William Rehnquist, the other Justice Byron White. White chastised his colleagues and said that he was unable to find anything in the language or history of the Constitution to support the Court’s judgment.

That day some of the most powerful men in the land crushed the legal standing of the most helpless members of society, leading the late theologian Francis Schaeffer to warn Christians that if life is devalued through killing the preborn human, disregard for the lives of other vulnerable members of society will follow.

My hope is that you will inform your congregation that they can participate in the observance of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday by joining with others to peacefully stand and hold signs reminding passersby of the need to end abortion. The observance will take place from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the 22^nd at the Veterans Terrace parking lot. Some churches have an assigned site where they will meet.

In conjunction with this effort, our own crisis pregnancy center, Life Choices at 340 N. Pine Street, will be holding an open house from 1:00 to 4:00 and hope people will come in and learn about their facility. Please inform your congregation of this open house.

Please encourage you congregation to participate and pray that babies lives will be saved

Youth from Peace serve the Love Inc meal

We were blessed to be able to serve a delicious, and amazingly varied, meal of hot dogs, enchiladas, beef stew with biscuits, chop suey, vegetables, and dessert to over 50 people at Love Inc meal site. That number includes 17 women and children residing at the Transitional Living Center. A special thanks goes out to Sue Hobach RN for getting things together this month, as well as all the people who provided the food!

Update on Pastor Ron Bachman

Gail, Joel, and I were blessed to attend the Wednesday evening communion service led by Pastor Ron Bachman at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Muskego on Wednesday evening at 7pm. Pr. Ron is doing really well with his chemo, and has been working very hard to keep his weight up above 150 lbs in the face of his diminished appetite. Harvest Party at Rowntree Farm

We had a wonderful turnout for the Harvest Party at the Rowntree Farm. The whole Rowntree clan, with some help from Debbie Weber, did an amazing job making us feel welcome. Many thanks to everyone for bringing a dish to pass. Most of all we want to thank God for such a beautiful day, and the opportunity to experience Christian fellowship.

Thrivent Financial will match $5 for every winter coat donated to Love, Inc.’s Winter Wraps Programs.

Last year Love, Inc. received $2,000 from Scott Herrmann of Thrivent Financial for the nearly 400 coats donated.

Haiti Food Pack Update

Dear Friends ,

We thank all those who signed up for our food pack for Haiti. We still have openings on all pack shifts and we’d like to fill every table so that we can send the maximum amount of food to hungry children. I was in Haiti in September and saw firsthand how many people are still living in squalid surroundings. I visited a number of orphanages and the directors all told me how our food was keeping their precious children alive.

If you are a teacher, scout leader, youth group leader or have a number of children that you think would benefit from helping hungry kids in Haiti, please let me know if you will need sponsorship support to help defray the cost of the requested donation. Please send me an email at karlralian@gmail.com, and let me know how many kids and the level of support you are looking for.

As we mentioned in a previous email, we will have Haitian dancers, musicians, arts and crafts to buy, and Haitian cuisine to taste. We will also have information on our “Next Step Challenge” which consists of building a village in Haiti. All those interested in helping Haiti recover from its devastating past need to come to the pack and learn how, together, the people of Southeast Wisconsin can make a huge difference in the lives of the Haitian people.
