The authors also provide a link to an article that looks at some of the common ways Sunday School materials misinterpret scripture while pointing to ways that adults can become better Bible teachers.  I really liked the following suggestion:

5. Focus on people rather than God: The Bible is God’s revelation of himself and its message and teaching is largely based on what it tells us about God. This is particularly true of narrative (stories). While we are drawn to observe the people in the stories, we cannot forget that the stories are intended to teach us about God more than about people. If in the end, the final point is “We should/shouldn’t be like X (= some biblical character)” there is probably a problem unless the “X” is Jesus or God. Better is “we can learn through X’s story that God . . .

The Sunday School Christmas program will be Sunday December 14th at the 10;30 AM service. All youth (K-12th) are invited to participate! We will assign parts and run through the program on Sunday December 7th at 9:15 AM. We will also have a rehearsal on Saturday Dec 13th, at 9:30 AM.

Questions to ponder include:  How does Moralistic Therapeutic Deism measure up to the faith revealed in the Bible and proclaimed by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ? What is your reaction to the researcher’s  assertion that parents are the single biggest influence on the beliefs and behaviors of American teens?  What implication does this work have for how you interact with kids? To what extent are adults in the pews really believers in Moralistic Therapeutic Deism?

Rally day is that day when we mark the conclusion of the summer and gear up for the "program year" by signing up for Sunday school and other ministries of the congregation. Please join your brothers and sisters in Christ as we renew our commitment to serve others in Jesus’ name!

More often than not these books end up being a collection of stories from the bible that are isolated from the larger “narrative arc” of the larger Biblical story. This book really puts the various stories of the Bible together in a way that puts human sin and God’s grace in their proper perspective and lets the reader understand how Christ is the key to interpreting the Scriptures. I just gave a copy to my six year old niece for her birthday but I would gladly give it to any adult (especially a Sunday School teacher) who wants to get the “Big Picture”  of the how God is at work to unite all things in Jesus Christ(Ephesians 1:3-10).

We will be singing songs, playing games, making cool crafts and eating yummy snacks while learning about the power of Jesus’ love for us.

Kids from preschool to 5th grade are welcome and anyone older is welcome to help out and enjoy the evening.  Adult Bible Study will be led by Pr. Vojta. 

No pre-registration needed or fee to pay—just show up and bring a friend or two!   If you can’t come all 5 evenings, come when you can.  We look forward to seeing you there.
